Computer systems can be used in Myanmar Language
MyMyanmar Unicode System Second Generation Introduced
Yangon, August 22
A ceremony to introduce and demonstrate MyMyanmar Unicode System Second Generation, which can be used on any computer systems, and MyWindows System, which enables the whole computer system to appear in Myanmar language, was held in the conference hall at Myanmar Info-Tech at the Yangon University (Hlaing Campus) this afternoon.
The ceremony was attended by the members of the Committee on Development of Myanmar Language for Computer Systems, personnel from Myanmar Computer Federation, Myanmar Computer Professional Association, Myanmar Computer Industrial Association, Myanmar Computer Enthusiasts Association, Myanmar Engineers Association, computer technicians and invited guests.
At the ceremony, Daw Wah Wah Tun, chairman of Myanmar Computer Industrial Association, gave an opening speech, explaining the role the Myanmar Unicode System plays in enabling every Myanmar national to use computers. Afterwards, U Thein Htut, vice chairman of Myanmar Computer Scientists Association, explained about the potential prevalence and advantages of Unicode systems in the future. Then he conveyed a message regarding Myanmar Unicode systems sent by Michael Everson of the Unicode Consortium.
After that, Maung Htoo Myint Naung, developer of MyMyanmar Unicode System, explained about the development of MyMyanmar Unicode System Second Generation, its user-friendliness, advantages and features.
MyMyanmar Unicode System Second Generation has been developed in line with the Unicode Standard 5.1 set in April 2007 by the Unicode Consortium, and includes MyInput, or a data input system that works with all Myanmar fonts that are compliant with the new Unicode standard. MyInput also enables other ethnic languages such as Kayin, Mon, and Shan to be used according to the Unicode system.
Afterwards, Maung Htain Lin Htoo presented an explanation about MyWindows system, that would enable the whole Windows XP operating system, now used on most computers, to be used in Myanmar language. All the menus and commands in the Windows will appear in Myanmar language, while naming files and search can also be made in Myanmar language.
As the application of the whole computer system becomes possible in Myanmar language, long-standing issue of language barrier will be greatly minimized, thus enabling all Myanmar nationals who are literate in Myanmar to use computers. This would contribute a great deal to the development of ICT in Myanmar. It is learned that MyMyanmar Unicode System Second Generation and MyWindows System will be distributed to the public in October.
Maung Htoo Myint Naung and Maung Htain Lin Htoo, who developed MyMyanmar Unicode System Second Generation and MyWindows System introduced today, are currently final year honors class students at Yangon University of Computer Studies. Maung Htoo Myint Naung successfully developed MyMyanmar Unicode System in his first year at the university and also developed Myanmar language for mobile phones in 2006.
